Calcium Carbonate with Vitamin D3
Calcium Carbonate Equivalent to Elemental Calcium 500 mg & Vitamin D3 200 IU
Calcium
- Prevents or treats negative calcium balance
- Helps facilitate nerve and muscle performance as well as normal cardiac functions
- Bone mineral component: cofactor in enzymatic reactions, essential for neurotransmission, muscle contraction and many signal transduction pathways
Vitamin D3
- It is a fat soluble sterol
- Necessary for the regulation of calcium and phosphate homoeostatic and bone mineralization
- Essential for healthy bones as it aids in calcium absorption from GI tract
- Stimulates bone formation
Calcium and Vitamin D has synergistic effect on bone growth as well as in Osteoporosis and fracture prevention. Vitamin-D3 plays following important roles:
Pharmacokinetics
Absorption : Bioavailability: 25-35% (calcium carbonate); Vitamin D: Fat soluble; requires bile; absorbed in small intestine
Distribution : Protein bound: 40-45% (calcium)
Metabolism : Vitamin D: Hydroxylated hepatically to calciferol (25-hydroxyvitamin D), then renally to the active metabolite calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D)
Elimination : 80% as unabsorbed calcium in feces(Calcium) , 20% urinary via urine & Vitamin D3: Faeces
Dosage
Adult: PO one tablet BID to be Taken after food
Indications
Contraindication
- Hypercalcemia and/or Hypercalciurea
- Hypophosphataemia
- Hypervitaminosis D
- Kidney stones
Precautions
- Should not be taken if the patient has hypercalcemia, hypervitaminosis D or malabsorption syndrome)
- Patient with renal impairment: Frequent monitoring of serum calcium and phosphorous is recommended
- Pregnant and Lactating women should not be supplied with more that recommended Dose
- Taking calcium supplements with iron or zinc compromises the absorption of these minerals
