PHARMACOLOGY
Chloramphenicol
Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It is bacteriostatic but may be bactericidal in high concentrations or when used against highly susceptible organisms. Chloramphenicol stops bacterial growth by reversibly binding of the 50S subunit of bacterial ribosomes leading to suppression of peptidyltransferase activity (where transfer of amino acids to growing peptide chains is prevented) thus inhibiting peptide bond formation and subsequent protein synthesis.
Lidocaine
Lidocaine (Lignocaine) is commonly applied topically for its strong local anesthetic properties. It has been proven to reduce pain in the auditory canal in patients affected by acute ear infections. Lidocaine alters signal conduction in neurons by blocking the fast voltage gated sodium (Na+) channels in the neuronal cell membrane that are responsible for signal propagation.
